Abstract

Purpose: In this study, the inter-institutional collaboration of Iranian patents in international patent databases is analyzed to develop indicators that connect technological inventiveness of university researchers to both funding organizations and users, as well as to entrepreneurial activities by academics.

Methodology: This research is an applied research that was conducted using scientometrics approaches. Organizational affiliation of Iranian patents retrieved from US Patents and Trademarks office (USPTO), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and European Patents Office (EPO) from 1976 to 2013 and analyzed according to supporters of the patent or patent owners and divided to three groups of individuals, companies, and universities and research institutes.

Findings: Of 120 retrieved patent, 33 items were supported by Iranian Oil Organization followed by Shahid Beheshti Medical Science University with 8 patents. The rate of inter-institutional collaboration on the patents was very limited.
Conclusion: The survey indicated that most patented academic inventions are connected to and often publicly funded by scientific research by the inventors and tend to be utilized in large firms rather than in start-up companies founded by academic entrepreneurs. An exclusive analysis of patents can point to patent concentrations on certain universities, to inventors and assignees, or to potential gaps in translating applied science into industrial technology.
