Purpose: To take steps in the path of adva development, countries need to prioritize research and its related activities. They should increase the research motivation in research centers. Accordingly, the publication of scientific outputs resulting from faculties’ research is currently a fundamental requirement and, in some cases, mandatory in universities. However, despite the efforts and successes achieved in policy-making, design, implementation, and surveillance of research, there are numerous obstacles and limitations in the way of conducting research. Therefore, numerous studies have been conducted to examine research obstacles, motivations and authorship patterns of researchers. In the same vein, The current study aims to determine the authorship patterns, motivations, and barriers of publishing articles by faculties of the humanities departments of the University of Tabriz in prestigious international journals.
Methodology: The research approach was quantitative. It was an applied in term ofresearch objectives and a survey in term of data collection. The population of this research included all 130 faculties of the humanities departments at the University of Tabriz. Regarding the limited size of the population, the entire population was surveyed and no sampling was done. A questionnaire was used to find out the authorship patterns, motivations and barriers of publishing articles by studied group. The questionnaire encompassed two parts. The first part was dedicated to collect demographic information of respondents. The second part consisted of items on main objectives and questions of this study. All the items were adapted from previous literature. The content validity of the questionnaire was approved by experts in the field of Sceintometrics. In addition, the reliability of the questionnaire was estimated to be 0.84 using the test-retest method. The data was analyzed using SPSS software.
Findings: The relevance of the journal to the research topic was the most important criteria for selecting journals for submitting articles by the research population. Most participating faculties in this study were the first or responsible author for 1 to 5 articles in the past two years. They also stated that the average time required to publish an article in the humanity science is on average 1 to 2 years. Most individuals who publish articles in prestigious international journals require financial support for translating the article, writing the article, open access fees, and publication fees. The results showed that the main barriers to publishing articles in prestigious international journals are unfamiliarity with the principles and methods of research, preoccupation, difficulties in coordination among co-authors, and reviewers' bias for some articles. On the other hand, training and holding professional workshops by the top professors of the country on publishing articles in international journals, increasing the research budget, supporting university officials for research and policy-making, and formulating a research strategy in the university can be considered the most important effective factors to increase the motivation to publish articles in prestigious international journals. The main requirements for faculty members in the humanities departments at the University of Tabriz for writing articles to be published in prestigious international journals include English translation and writing of the article, critical review of the literature, managing comments from co-authors, and writing responses to reviewers. from the perspective of the faculties of Humanities departments at the University of Tabriz, the main reasons for rejecting of their article in prestigious international journals was the poor quality of writing in in English, poor writing quality in general, and excessive use of Persian sources.
Conclusion: In general, the important motivating factors for publishing articles in prestigious international journals can be divided into two categories: knowledge and financial factors. The most important motivations for the humanities faculties of the University of Tabriz to publish articles were career advancement, pressure from organization administration, dissemination of new ideas and findings, recognition and reputation among colleagues, and financial gain. It should be noted that these needs and motivations are what lead to individual and organizational progress, and any organization that is capable of cultivating and managing them in a desirable way can have good research performance. In this respect, it is reasonable for universities to focus more on motivations that derive from faculties’ desire for scientific and organizational promotion, rather than external and administrative pressures. Furthermore, it was found that most of the humanities’ faculties of the University of Tabriz need more coordination skills to have a better collaboration with co-authors. They also need more help in critical and analytical literature review as well as responding to reviewers. The difficulty of coordinating among colleagues is due to the educational, research, and occupations of faculties, which can be reduced using research assistants whether from graduate students or university staff. However, the need for critical and analytical literature review is a knowledge requirement and requires holding workshops and collaborating with experienced writers. Finally, The results of this research can be used in the university's research policy in the humanities.
